Clear golden color poured in the big Duvel glass with adequate foam and plenty of carbonation going down the throat. Very aromatic with some resins and tropical fruit.
Right from the first gulp this just has that right balance of grain and bitters, resiny rye and sweet malt. Whatever hop they use is just the right note. This has plenty of scratch but it's one of the more mellow Rye Ales I've tried. I think this is about tops in drinkability for me-- or perhaps can't-stop drinkability.
This is my favorite of Coronado's hoppy brews by far. I keep thinking of lighter-weight tangy beers that would be ideal in the cans that are becoming locally popular (like Modern Times, Mission, Black Market, and Pizza Port). This would be my choice and with the controlled carbonation it would be sensational. From the 32 oz growler purchased at the tasting room in San Diego off Morena Blvd. Five bucks a fill!
