This one is passable like Raul’s high school career. And like Raul’s high school career, I’d rather not revisit it again. Good, bad, weird… Shy… Oh, this beer... Yeah, it’s just average like a hot dog with mustard. It will fill your belly, but your belly knows it’s not anything Michelin recommend. Like girlfriend number 2, you drink it and you move on to what you hope are greener pastures.

Had on tap (Nitro) at SBW. Nice easy sipper. Nitro fills out body a bit and seems to dampen some of bitterness noted by others. Caramel with hints dark chocolate and espresso. Moderately high ABV completely hidden. Reputable stout for sessioning and darts. Enjoyed it.

On-tap at Solvang Brewing Company, Solvang, CA
A: The beer is opaque brownish black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dense light beige head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a short head coating the surface and the sides of the glass.
S: Faint aromas of chocolate are present in the nose along with notes of gunpowder from a cap gun.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of gunpowder along with hints of chocolate malts.
M: It feels light-bodied and a bit smooth and thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. It becomes a little smoother as the beer warms up.
O: This beer is lighter in body, a little thinner, and not as smooth compared to most other oatmeal stouts.
Serving type: on-tap

Was hoping to try the black IPA but they were out today, so went for option number two which was the stout. What I would expect if one merged a standard oatmeal stout and guinness. Nicely balanced with a hint of sweetness. $5 for a pint which hit the spot. Didn't see a sampler on the menu which would have been a nice option for their on premise brews.

You would think being a mile away from Firestone Walker Tap room would be enough motivation to make tasty beer. Nope, not happening. This oatmeal stout was raunchy, and should have at the very least been labeled as a dry stout. I hope someone buys this place, and does it justice, as Solvang is a lovely place to visit, and needs some beer the town can be proud of.

Sampled 11/28/2010 at the brewpub.
Pours dark brown, hazy, off white head, average retention and lacing.
Aroma is chocolate, molasses, roast, and a little bit of earthy hops.
Flavor is fairly complex with chocolate, oatmeal, syrup, molasses, roast, and nuts. Highly bitter and a lager quality to it that I can't explain.
Body is on the lighter side of medium. Drinkability is there but the bitterness detracts a bit.
