Helheim is the place where the evil ones like Loki are sent to dwell. Dark, malty, roasty, with a nice caramel and slight but pleasant diacetyl finish. Roasted coffee and nut aroma. Carbonation a little on the weak side but certainly in the acceptable realm. Balanced- the beer I had seems much different than the one described in the other reviews.
We found most Solvang ales practically undrinkable, but this one was tasty indeed.

Consumed at brewery on Saturday, November 5th 2011.
The beer is a very, very dark brown with some mahogany highlights. No head to speak of.
Aroma is almost not there, but a whiff of coffee grounds can be detected with some effort.
Flavor is rusty and mineral up front with no malt character at all. Some coffee flavor (thin, black, old and bitter) on finish.
Mouthfeel is thin and slightly astringent.
This beer and the Dansk Amber are the best of a sad bunch at this brewery, but that's faint praise indeed. Not a beer I would want to have again, but at least it's not infected.

I needed something to wipe out the plague known as Midnight Lager, and I hoped Hell could provide the answer. On to the beer:
Black bodied with a brown hue and no head on top. The nose shows promise; there is some moderate pine and a faint chocolate note. And the promise is made a reality; Helheim may be the cure. It's certainly hoppy and unbalanced, but the hoppiness isn't excessive. The pine is easy to spot. Roasted malt notes are very light. Vague citrus peel runs around. The aftertaste finishes bitter, and while the beer is relatively thin and low in carbonation, I did find Helheim to be decent.
