A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2013. Purchased cheaply at a local off-licence as it was short-dated. Described on the label as a creamy beer with a roasted barley aftertaste.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A very dark reddish-brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Yields a decent head of creamy light-brown foam that lasts for a few minutes before collapsing to a thin surface layer. Aroma of rich roasted malt with hints of burnt grain, coffee, nuttiness, molasses, mild chocolate and earthy yeast. Nicely rounded; it smells moreish.
Tastes of dark roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, coffee, molasses/caramel, nuttiness, mild chocolate, earthy yeast and faint stewed hops. Rich and malty, with a roasty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and creamy, with lovely body and light carbonation. Mildly astringent, with an aftertaste of roasted malt, coffee and bitter stewed hops.
Tasty - a quality stout from Daleside. Looks decent, though the head didn't stick around for long. The aroma and flavour are great; plenty of roasted barley and coffee notes make this a delight to quench a thirst with. Good depth of character and the body is satisfyingly creamy. Nicely done - well worth sampling if you come across it.
