a nice porter here, with just hint of coffee to it, nothing over the top. the color is close to jet black, as close as brown can be, not particularly viscous looking though, and pushing up an inch of almost pure white foam. the nose on it is nice, cleaner ale yeast and bitter dark barley combine well with a coffee richness and hearty fresh grain aromatic. there is very little residual sugar here, the beer is bitter and dry, also rather quick finishing for the style, an impressive and unique feature. the bitterness is a little intense though, and lacks that rounding out middle of sweet roast that tempers the finish. not very complex, but quite tasty, i like that the coffee flavor is so subtle. soft carbonation works in this medium bodied porter. it gets a little thin as it warms, and might do well with some oatmeal or something in the mash for a little more flesh, but i like the feel of this quite well. easy enough to down a few mugs. one of the more enjoyable brews at this hip little joint in sheridan.
