In 1900 Brown Ale was a popular Ale in British pubs. Our interpretation leads to a refreshing beer with a nut brown color, with intense hop aroma and strong malt notes - a "mosaic" of hops and malt.

Hops: Mosaic, East Kent Golding, Hallertauer Mittelfrüh, Magnum.
Malts: Pale Ale, Caramel Malt

Copenhagen 18/5 2019. 33 cl bottle from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. BraufactuM's usual design in burgundy and with what looks like Wallpaper in bad taste.

Pours clear dark amber brown with a medium-sized off-white head. Settles as thin patchy layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is medium intense, sweet with citric sour notes. Caramel and toffee with light citric notes of citrus and lime. A little metallic.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily texture.

Flavor is medium sweet followed by a slightly stronger bitterness with citric undertones. Aftertaste is bitter with a light sweet undercurrent. Semi-dry finish. Lingers for a while.

Solid Brown Ale with a prominent bitter edge.

Frothy, above-the-rim standing head. Excellent lacing with blankets, rings, and streaks. The color is light brown with a moderate haze.

Semisweet caramel with a brown bread background. Lighter floral hop.

The taste has some burnt toffee flavors. There’s also unsweetened caramel (unlike the smell). The texture is richer than most Brown Ales although the lack of sweetness wouldn’t put this in the (aled) Bock category. This more like a darker Amber Ale with some brown bread characteristics. The combination works.

Pours a fairly clear, mahogany coloration with a ruby sheen when held up to the light and a large, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and red fruits, with notes of redcurrant and cranberry, as well as just a hint of coffee. Taste is a good balance of bready, caramel malt and bitter, herbal hops, with notes of red berry: redcurrant, cranberry, as well as hints of coffee, nuts and pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some caramel malt, red berries and herbal hops lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I did enjoy this well enough, it almost feel like more of Red than Brown Ale to me, with its focus on caramel malt, red berries and herbal, bitter, piney hops, despite hints of nutty, coffee accents. A bit of an odd mix between the two perhaps, which works out all right, but feels just a little bit neither here nor there, to be honest.

hazelnut brown color with hazelnut and caramel aroma ascending from a slightly biege fluffy head.
Tastewise a small disapointment as it delivers a bit of the malt flavor that is vomit-like to my palate. However, not going into metallic. Body is leaning towards watery with the given low abv this is not too problematic. Carbonation is a bit high for an English brown but fits it well. Good ale.

On tap at the 2014 Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours a murky reddish-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, nut, and caramel aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, nut, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice balance of toast, nut, and citrus qualities.
