2012 Barley's Wine released at the brewery in late November 2013.

The beer was served in a tulip-shaped glass that I believe is called a Pokal.

A- The beer was a dark amber or copper color and was very opaque. The head looked very chewy, frothy and was khaki-colored.

S- Heavy piney hops hit first, then some alcohol astringency, sweet malt and caramel.

T- The beer is immediately sweet, then goes hoppy and bitter, then the caramel and toffee emerge alongside a subtle maltiness.

M- The beer has a great thick mouthfeel, a mild to moderate alcohol burn, hop bitterness at the start and a combination of alcohol and bitterness at the finish which makes for a very dry ending.

O- This beer has a lot of tasty flavors and a nice sweetness to it that is balanced out by the bitterness and intense alcohol. The alcohol can be a bit overpowering, so I'd love to try this beer after a few years of bottle-conditioning and age. Still, a tasty beer.

poured from the growler into a goblet

A – Pours a deep, transparent amber with little carbonation rising to the 1-finger, off-white head. About half way down the glass, the head a myriad of tiny bubbles making intricate patterns on the surface of the beer. Unfortunately, few of these tiny bubbles stick and only a few splotches of lacing are left behind.

S – Nice bouquet of sweet figs, caramel malt and piney hops with a touch of alcohol.

T – Carmel and figs upfront. The body is very rich and bold; striking an excellent balance between a caramel malt backbone and piney American hops with flourishes of fig. Extreme sensation of piney hops as the beer passes over the tongue transitions into a fig and rum cake finish.

M – Full bodied with moderate carbonation and substantial mouth-filling creaminess. Suites the style well.

Barley’s Wine is such a potent brew that it makes finishing off the growler in an acceptable time by myself a daunting task. Glad I picked up this seasonal following my tour of the brewery as the aromas and flavors are incredibly rich and complex. The 10.8% ABV of this brew is well disguised, and only makes itself apparent in the finish. Will definitely take my growler back for a refill once I finally finish to try some of La Cumbre’s other offerings.
