Serving: Bottle
No date despite alluding to years it could be aged in the label. Seriously?!
A:
It pours crystal clear ruby with a finger of fizzy white head. Ok-ish retention; lots of lacing. (4.25)
S:
Acetic bite, granny smiths, cinnamon brown sugar. (4.25)
T:
Earthy and light apple tartness, some underlying sweet bread. (4.5)
M:
Dry, slightly astringent, acetic twang, active carbonation. (4)
O:
It pours nice looking. Perfectly clear with a nice little cap of foam. The aroma is immediately apparent with tart apples, light funk and a complex earthiness from the barrel. The flavor follows but the main thrusts are reversed. An earthy, faintly vinous/woody character is up front with a light tart bite underneath. This is a light-on-its-feet, dry, sour that is wholly enjoyable and was a great to try. Thank you kindly, Señor Lizard! (4.25)

Love me some Brewery Vivant sours and this did not disappoint. There is a nice bite from the red wine barrels it is aged in and the taste is nice and puckery with perhaps some hints of fruit. Will definitely sit on my other bottle to see how this develops but certainly tasting good right now. Wish I would have bought more.

$ 8.00/10 oz tulip at brewery ($ 0.80/oz), $ 11.98/500 mL bottle at brewery
Red wine barrel aged Brettanomyces “wild” ale
Aroma – smells sour, nothing really distinctive
Head – little when received from server – small (< one cm), off white, creamy, diminishing to irregular four to six mm ring and thin layer
Lacing – poor. Few tiny islands of tiny bubbles
Body orange/amber, slight haze
Flavor – slightly sour, little pucker power, vinous, no particularly offensive or memorable flavors, very little yeast phenolics; no hops, no malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate light to medium, watery, lively carbonation
This was pretty fresh and may need to age a while. I’ve got some bottles for another time.
Appearance 3.75, Aroma 3.75, Flavor 3.5, Palate 3.75, Overall 3.75.
