32oz swingtop growler poured into a Portsmouth 20th Anniversary stemmed glass.
A - Pours a muddy, yeasty pink grapefruit juice colored body. A thin half finger of loose, fizzy white foam...loose, fizzy collar with some sparse lacing left on the glass.
S - Has an extremely biscuity and yeasty, bready base aroma...a bit of bitter earthiness on top of that and just a touch of raspberry there too. Fruit is very subtle in the aroma. As it warms, there is a bit of a solventy cleaning agent like aroma that ends up being a bit distracting and takes away from an otherwise good smelling beer.
T - Although the raspberry plays a rather mild role in the nose, I am pleasantly surprised how much raspberry appears in the flavor. Fruit is quite forward in the flavor profile and is the first thing that is noticed. Fruit is followed by a mild tartness, yeast, earth, biscuits. Finishes dry and tart with a touch of aspirin/medicinal-like bitterness.
M - Appropriately thinnish body with a higher level carbonation. A bit medicinal on the finish but otherwise fruity.
O - Flavor is good overall and the high point of the beer (which if anything is going to be the highlight, I'd choose this). The off aroma that comes on as it warms is the downer here and is the single biggest detractor here. It is also a bit debatable how "wit-y" this is - it is light and crisp with strong carbonation, but the fruit overpowers the subtle aspects of this style - no real spices can be found here. Nevertheless, it is light and refreshing...worth a shot.
