I love Marmaduke! The dog in the comic. Not the beer (not yet at least). Now I’ve got my hands on another Moon Dog mad experiment and I’m looking at the bottle wondering just how it’s all going to come together, but I know that Moon Dog have pulled it all together to at least produce an interesting and drinkable brew. Anyway no further ado, BRING ON THE MARMALADE BEER! [my beer today is brought to me on a silver platter carried by a big grey Great Dane hound].

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Looks a treat with a cloudy orange conserve coloured body and a slightly off-white 1cm cappuccino head on top... mmmmm-marmajuke marmalade double IPA!* 8/10.

S: Hoppy aromas upfront with bold notes of pine and citrus, earthy characters and hints of orange jam in the background. The hops make this a typical West Coast Double IPA and there’s not much else to distinguish this as a Marmalade flavoured beer... disappointing but hopefully the flavour will come out to play. 6/10.

T: Yep, it’s another Moon Dog brew packed to the gills with flavour intensity (and booze!). Flavours of: Piney/citrus/earthy hops, orange jam and a fusel alcohol burn towards the back. Not bad this combination of West Coast hops and Marmalade - it’s not overly sweet as one would expect from reading the bottle label. This is a well-balanced DIPA with a bit of booziness (it is 8.4% ABV after all)... I like it! 8/10.

M: Medium bodied with a light but dense carbonation. 8/10.

D: Yum. There’s plenty going on with this brew and the orange jam gives it a point of difference to the 12,309,786,365+ Double IPAs out there... caveat: the orange flavours are a bit overpowered by those West Coast hops and as a result this brew could do with a bit more Marmalade flavour concentration (without adding sweetness). Some actual jam being added to the fermenter wouldn’t have gone astray either... oh yeah and the price of this beer puts it at odds with comparative American DIPAs. 7/10.

Food match: Canard à l'Orange burrowed its way into my brain and now I can’t think of anything else... scones with Marmalade and whipped cream - that’s better.

*Kind of rolls off the tongue.

Pours amber with a small head.
Nose shows heavy sweet malt, orange skin, soft pine and grapefruit.
Bold malty flavours with a massive herbal hit. Some orange peel.
