Moon Dog + Bloody Mary cocktail = more craft beer insanity. Once again those wily brewers at Moon Dog have taken a classic thing and beerified it with their magic beer wands*. In any case this was a difficult purchase considering the last time I tasted tomatoes in a beer was when I had that infected Delirium Tremens... needless to say it was a weird and wild experience and not one I was looking forward to reliving any time soon. Oh well, out on a limb time!
Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.
A: Presents a clear dark red/brown body that looks like a consommé (a type of soup) with a thin dense bubble tan head that reduces to a lace ring. I feel like tucking into this with a spoon and garnish it with a stick of celery. 7/10.
S: Comes through with a bold celery character which dominates the aroma, with stewed tomatoes in the background - it’s my first review Delirium Tremens all over again, only this time the stewed tomatoes are an intentional aroma. There’s a hint of spice in there as well - must be chillies and Worcestershire sauce. 7/10.
T: OK! This is one wild ride of a beer. First off - it’s savoury, an unusual flavour combination of celery, hints of tomato, and that meaty Worcestershire sauce rounding everything out. Then we get some sweet notes from the malts - which add a hint of sweetness without taking away from the umami. It finishes with a hint of chilli spice and a slight bitterness from the hops to remind us that this is fact a beer and not some weird carbonated Gazpacho. You were looking for something different: Here be it. 8/10.
M: Mid to light body with light, sharp carbonation. Feels brew appropriate (or ‘brewpropriate’ if you will). 7/10.
D: Is it good? Hmmm, erm, err... I haven’t decided. It is one different brew, and that is to be expected from Moon Dog - those purveyors of anomalous brews that somehow work despite the improbability of the ingredients ever working together in any beer of any kind. Would I have this again? Yes, this brew is an intriguing savoury experience that I would have again. Perhaps this is the greatest trick this brew has played - the savoury experience. 7/10.
Food match: Anyone for Bloody Marys?
*I wish I had a magic beer wand.
