The reach of the New England styled IPA has no limits on its reach. Now that the Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company has gotten into the action, the imperial status of the trend has now stretched from sea to not-so-shining sea.
The rather turbid beer pours like white grapefruit juice. But its large and frothy crown creates an aura of candied citrus, tropical fruit, light herb and pine along with a tangy succulence that further entices the nose. Its taste is soft, creamy and pastry-like with peps of honey and spongecake peaking through its malty foundation.
Its sweetness gradually retreats and allows the juiciness of hops to garner the middle palate. Citrus fruit of pink grapefruit has a large presence, and its orange and lemon complement reinforce the beer's citrusy focus. But its tropical rebuttal isn't far off. Pineapple, passionfruit, light mango and kiwi offer an exotic fruitiness that develops into a bright and herbal pine flavor with lemon verbena, sassafras and chive before a medium high bitterness to dry the palate and offset the fruit.
Medium bodied and seeming fuller at first, the beer's creamy early palate suggests something rich and soft. But a smooth finish is off of complete dryness as hints of sweetness and starchy malt remains. Tethers of pastry remains and takes the edge off of the bitterness in finish and aftertaste while a bright and piquant taste of tropcial and citrus peels linger in a medium long aftertaste.
