Belgian Bock with star ainise, orange peel & coriander.

Ah there once was a Belgian from Uccle, who liked to eat frites with his broth full of cockle. And though he was from near Ghent, and liked his grain well spent. His brewing ability matched his name of De Bockle. (This beer though is actually pretty darn good). Prost!

First off, per the bottle, this is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale, not a doppelbock. So Im reviewing it as a BSPA.

Pours golden and hazy with a thick thick pillowy head. Head dissipates steadily leaving some lacing and a thin layer of bubbly foam.

Smell is very yeasty with a peppercorn like note. Its peppery, but not super spicy. Not much in the way of the orange, coriander and star anise on the nose.

Taste is - well, not good. Its very watery overall. Tastes like it has old orange juice that went bad in it. Very bitter almost metallic taste on the finish. There is a medicinal flavor to the yeast that is very off putting. Harsh almost ethanol like alcohol taste on lingers on the tongue.

Feel is very smooth, and buttery. Its thick, heavy for a belgian strong ale. Almost syrupy. Under carbonated for the style.

This beer just isn't very good. The flavor is syrupy, tastes like bad oranges and is metallic on the finish. I normally love Urban Chestnut's beers, but this is just a major miss. Its not even an average belgian strong pale ale. I wouldn't drink this again if you bought it for me. I will say though, they did pick a good name for this beer because it is a big deBockle.

From a 500 ml bottle, this beer is hazy, almost milky, in complexion, with a straw color and a modest white head. The aroma is complex...bread underneath, with spice on top...coriander is notable. Some fruit. The taste has an underlying sweetness. Spice, phenols, and an underlying bitterness in the flavor. Full in boy and very satisfying. This is an excellent beer. I'm not sure I'd call it a dopplebock, but it is very enjoyable.

Bottle. Appearance: Looks like apple juice. Dark golden with an orange hue. Cloudy. Head is nonexistent. Aroma: Clove phenols present, no noticeable fruity Belgian yeast esters. Hint of caramel malts. No hop aroma. Taste: Bracingly sweet maltiness, almost cloying, with some spice and banana flavor a on the swallow. Bitterness comes thru as the sweet malt fades. Almost has a bit of vinous flavor. Mouthfeel: Medium body with some syrupy thickness, and little to now carbonation. Alcohol heat is sharp, not smooth. Finish: sweet maltiness lingers, leaving a sticky residue not cleared because of the low carbonation. Overall: An obviously under attenuated beer. Cloyingly sweet malt, Belgian yeast characteristics are minimal, carbonation is non existent, and alcohol warmth is harsh.

16oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It left little to no lacing. It smelled of toffee, caramel, grains, yeastiness and spices. Sweet caramel taste with toasted bread, toffee and a mild spicy bitterness.

Light copper in color with great clarity. A fingernail of off white covers a third of the top. Aroma is of coriander and a faint whiff of orange peel. The flavor is comprised of pale wheat, coriander, and orange peel. The mouth is full of of spices and yet fairly watery.

Pours an effervescent amber & a thin beige head. Middling clarity, worse head retention & lacing

S: Juicy fruit, orange peel, white pepper, coriander, a little licorice, plus pears & apricots; great nose

T: Follows the nose, a little figgyness, pears, a little leafy hop & some white grape up front. A little honey crisp apple, white grape, orange peel & a little anise as this warms. Finishes jammy, figgy, with a little gooseberry, dry with a little anise & coriander

MF: Medium body, smooth carbonation

Drinks so easy, really enjoyed this, a very nice take on the style, showed me a few new subtle points...
