Konomi (Japanese Ale Brewed with Matcha and Rice)
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Japan America Society of St. Louis, Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. collaborated with Masumi Sake in Suwa, Japan (St. Louis’ sister city) to brew Konomi 好み, a Japanese Ale brewed with sake yeast. The Masumi Sake Brewery, operated by the Miyasaka family since 1662, discovered and isolated “Brewing Association Yeast Number Seven” the now widest used sake strain in the world, and sent Urban Chestnut their home yeast with which to brew the beer. Konomi 好み.

16oz can pours a pale golden yellow color with a fairly thick cap of fizzy, white-colored head that fades down to a thin layer while leaving substantial lacing. Smells of light malts, adjuncts, and an earthy green tea note. The light malt and rice flavors are accented by a light fruity flavor (from the yeast, maybe?) and a nice earthy/grassy flavor from the matcha. Light sweetness with a small bitterness, medium body, and a very fizzy carbonation mouthfeel. Earthy and slightly sweet aftertaste.
This beer was honestly delicious and very drinkable as well. Feels like one of the more unique beers out there and I definitely think I'll buy this again.

I had this on draft 7/13/23 @ the Hopleaf.
Cloudy pale yellow appearance.
Minimal off-white head; minimal lace.
Crisp grain & faint lemon notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Crisp grain & green tea flavors.
Balanced, but a bit dry and not overall memorable. It'll do in a pinch, though.

Cloudy yellow pour with two fingers of white foam. Smell and taste feature a really nice marriage of the rice and green tea, giving off notes of orange, grapefruit, lime peel and flower petals. Feel is light, almost juicy for a moment with the fruit in the center, before rice and yeast finish.

Light, partially cloudy yellow body; fair carbonation; nice white head, sudsy and fluffy. Alluring aroma of mint and citrus; fresh orange and tangerine; jasmine. A unique taste of white grapefruit and tea; little to no hop bitterness; slight twinge of biscuit at the very finish. Medium-light body; coarse carbonation; seems a bit thin; semi-dry finish.
A unique take for a light ale, this beer delivers some interesting sensory sensations to the palate. The aroma is the highlight, all fresh citrus with other elements likely the result of the sake yeast and green tea also used in the creation of this beer. The taste isn't bad either, bringing some interesting play with sake and green tea dryness adding depth. Still, it mouthfeel has a weak sensation overall. A good and refreshing beer for times when a light, citrus-like, warm weather beer would fit the bill, but not something I would want to have that often.
Pouring temperature: 40 °F; canning info: 22-06-22

From the brewer:
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Japan America Society of St. Louis, Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. (4465 Manchester Ave) collaborated with Masumi Sake in Suwa, Japan (St. Konomi 好み debuts Labor Day weekend at the Japanese Festival 2017 at the Missouri Botanical Garden.
In addition to using sake yeast and in homage to the Missouri Botanical Garden, Konomi was also brewed with small quantities of matcha, giving the beer a slight essence of the intense, powered green tea used in tea ceremony, but without overwhelming or competing with the fruity characteristics of the yeast. Rice was also used in a portion of the grain bill. The result is a light and refreshing ale perfect for the warm days of the Japanese Festival.
The name Konomi, agreed upon by Dave Lowry of the Japanese America Society and Katsuhiko Miyasaka, son of the current president and future successor of the Miyasaka Brewery, means “to like” or “to favour” in everyday parlance. However, from the tea ceremony comes a slightly different connotation, wherein konomi is a creative impulse that vivifies something in a new way.
The Japanese Festival takes place Saturday through Monday on Labor Day weekend at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Konomi will be available in the food court at the Japan America Society beer & sake booth.
