The Dunkel style is what many refer to as the original beer of Munich and the surrounding countryside and villages (Dorf in German) of Bavaria. This everyday beer ranges in color from amber to dark brown, depending on the amount of Munich and roasted malts used. Ours is a deep reddish brown with a rich malty flavor. The sweetness of the malt is balanced by the use of another Bavarian friend…the Hallertau hop…in this specific case Hersbrucker grown near Wolnzach, Hallertau.

16 oz. can poured into tall mug
(6/5/24 born-on date printed on bottom of can)
ABV note: 5% printed on side of can, not 4.8% per the BA database and the brewery website
L: murky dark brown with amber-gold highlights topped by 2-inch head of tan foam; no sticking/lacing; keeps a full skin and thick collar of beige/tan foam; it's about 50% clear
S: toasted grain, hints of dark dried fruits/fruitcake, dark bread; sweetens as it warms
T: dry cocoa powder, earth, dirt, dark chocolate, toasted grain, wheat bread; as it warms, the sweeter dark-malt flavors wake up, licorice and raisins and the earthy dirt bitterness starts taking on a bit of oak flavor
F: midweight, plenty of carbonation, very solid
O: considering this beer is almost a year old in the can, not bad at all; the look is suspiciously murky for a lager, but the aroma and flavor are very in line with a dunkel ... so is the color for that matter, murky though it may be; the brewery went bankrupt but was bought and continues to operate, and I'd love to try more of their stuff; in fact, I'd love to try a fresher version of this dunkel; pretty solid beer

Dark brown with light tan head. I can't catch all that much on the nose. Taste is brown bread, a bit of chocolate, some brown sugar, with a light hop touch in the finish. But all this is pretty muted. Body is medium light. Nothing horrible, nothing great.

L: Pours a dark brown color with a medium foamy head and no lacing on the glass.
S: Dark toasted bread mixes with chocolate and a touch of caramel, this is a very inviting aroma for a beer.
T: Some earthy malt mixes with a dark toasted bread and hints of chocolate and caramel, this is a very enjoyable dunkel
F: Smooth carbonation, medium body
O: Another fantastic beer from Urban Chestnut

Poured a copper body with decent tan head and some lace down the glass. The aroma is nice with some earthy, spring-like hops and a touch of chocolate malt. There is a touch of chocolate sweetness in this beer that is underneath a floral, earthy hoppiness and some biscuit-like dryness on finish in this smooth, easy-sipping beer.

16oz can from Tavour. Brown pour, clear, tan head settles to thin layer, spotty lacing. Toasty malt aroma, nutty, woody, mild sweetness. Taste is malty, cola flavors, nutty, sweet notes, then dry at the finish with the faintest hit of bitterness.

Poured into a Krombacher Pilsner glass from a 1/2 liter bomber.
appearence: Big light tan frothy head with decent lacing. Very nice copper color very clear (looks more like an altbier). Light carbonation with very fine bubbles.
Nose: Has that typical German lager smell with more malt - very pleasant. (I think this is from the noble hops and the Munich malt)
Taste: Medium body - on the lighter side for this style. Very good balance between the noble hops and malt . Slight sweetness with a suprisingly semi-dry finish, some background roasted malt in there too.
This is a very well done Dunkel. Especially from this side of the pond.
I enjoyed this one very much and will purchase again if I can find it ( I got the last 4 pack on the shelf)

Half pour at the Bierhall. Another stellar German staple beer executed extremely well. Dunkel is one of my favorite styles in Germany and this is as good as the best there. Rich, roasty, malty goodness with a hint of coffee and cocoa in the finish. Super smooth, perfect carbonation, easy drinker. Would drink often if I was local.

500mL bottle stamped 2023-07-12 (about 6 weeks old) poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 4.8% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright dark amber with copper highlights and khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Slight lacing. The aroma is mild with nutty, toasted malt. The taste is semisweet toasted malt with earthy, nutty overtones and a firm, moderate closing bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good to excellent dunkel.
