This Maifest special is sweet, soothing, and a deceptive delight. So much so that it may deceive thy sight. Should you start to see visions of Elf King fame, heed the warnings from where this beer gets its name. Spelled out clearly in the Goethe poem…Hold on tight to a loved one, and head for home.

500mL bottle, date stamped 2019-11-06. Hazy pale amber colored ale with a foamy white head that slowly fades. Sweet aroma of wheat, honey, banana, clove, bread yeast. Bold flavors with rendered overall sweetness; notes of honey, wheat, banana, bubblegum, clove, and herbal/earthy/spicy hops. Full creamy body, alcohol is warming, amole carbonation, finish remains sweet with a bit of spicy hop lingering. This is right up there with some of my favorite Weizenbocks - great beer for the season!

Erlkönig - an American brewed dry-hopped weizenbock. Appearance is golden yellow-orange. Cloudy and opaque with a three finger or so white head that dissipates steadily but never completely. Its definitely dry-hopped as the aroma has a prominent fruity hoppy note on the nose with underlying notes of wheat, clove and nutmeg. The taste follows the nose with clove, banana and nutmeg cascading over a strong wheat backbone all mingled with some fruity hop notes ... frankly the dry hopping here isn't bad, but its not doing it for me. I'd rather have this one sans dry hopping. Feel is spritzy with a really vibrant carbonation coming through. Smooth, velvety mouthfeel - medium to full bodied.

Pours a very light, wheat, yellow with barely a Hint of haze. Not much head. Looks almost like a bud, Just a shade less clear...I say that to say this... the look didn't tell me anything about this beer, and didn't even hint at what was to come. The first whiff was surprisingly sweet. Some familiar esters and subtle bubble gum. Taste reminded me of a saison or two. Heavy carbonation bite led to a tart sour undertone. As it warmed, the bite faded and the spice came out. Cracked pepper and heavy, dark fruit. There's a little of everything going on here. Says ' pale double wheat bock ale '...I don't know about that, but I liked it. I don't know if the rhyme on the label was written afterwards to try to explain this beer, or if they set out to create something deceptive from the get go. If this was the intention, then bravo, job well done Urban Chestnut.

16 ounce bottle into a weizen glass.
Pours a bright yellow, some haze. Medium head with an average pour that dissipates quickly, some foamy cling. Smell brings lots of wheat, some malt, yeast and black pepper. Getting a little smoke as it warms. Taste also leads with wheat, yeast, less malt than the nose. A bit of spiciness, maybe some cloves, for one. Smooth, somewhat crisp. Body could be fuller, even for the style.
Decent beer, a good wheat ale. Does not taste like a Weizenbock to me, much less body and depth of flavor.

16oz bottle. No code date. Appearance: pale golden and cloudy with moderate white foam cap. Aroma: Heavy clove notes, but less banana than typical weizen yeast. Taste: Rich maltiness with clove spice and soft breadiness. Yeast flavor a bit subdued, and a slight medicinal bite on the back end. Mouthfeel: Light to moderate body for style, with moderate-high carbonation. Finish: Bready with clove spice on the finish. A bit of harsh alcohol. Overall: An average weizenbock. A bit harsh on the finish doesn’t leave it as clean as Aventinus or Vitus, but there are worse examples.

Pours an effervescent honey color with 2 fingers+ of pearl white head. Nice head retention & lacing
S: A little breadyness, a little pear, some rubberband
T: Follows the nose, some herbal notes, a little lemon zest. Slight pepperiness as this warms, a little grassiness, pears & breadiness & green banana. Finishes with pears, green banana, a little white pepper, & some juicy fruit
MF: Medium bodied, subtle carbonation
A pretty passable iteration of the style, would buy this again if I'm in the mood for the style . Very drinkable
