A typical German dunkel, pours a cola color with thin but airy head. Roast grain flavor is evident but not overpowering. Palate is thin and watery, but there is a pleasant bitterness lingering. This one is righ tin the middle of the pack....

Appearance: Very dark, rich brown color--auburn against the light. A taupe head that disappears instantly, although fine bubbles continue to rise throughout the drinking session.
Smell: Molasses and charcoal, earthy, slightly sweet.
Taste: Like a Guiness without the bitter hops--very much like a mild Guiness. Smoky, molasses notes in the flavor, not too sweet--not too complex, in fact; the flavor is simpler than the smell. Consistent taste throughout; this is a sip that doesn't hit in stages, although there is a mild hoppy taste that lingers.
Mouthfeel: Chewy, nicely carbonated, full and rich.
Overall: Husband says: a great smoky lager.A very pleasant cold-weather beer. Wife says: this is a Guiness-style beer I can actually love. The nose is molasses, but it's not a candy beer.

Having read the other review, we wonder if our colleague got a bad bottle. We're not picking up metal or sulfur in this beer.

.5L bottle, best before 11/4/11.

Pours clear dark brown with nice red highlights. Soda-like head is unimpressive.

The nose is very metallic and sharp. Not good. Though, there's some nutty, malty aromas, so I can't completely slam it.

Flavor is only slightly better, with a grainy and toasted malt character. Roasted nuts and caramel, but also some undesirable tangy metal. Light bitterness and sulfuric hop flavor. The mouthfeel is actually nicely carbonated, though there's an unpleasant drying character, and the metal lingers.

Overall, this is not a drinkable beer. Too metallic, like aluminum and batteries. Drank about a third of my glass, but the rest's a drain pour, something very rare for me as I *hate* to waste beer.
