Hegemony Anniver9ary Reserve 2020 Rye Barrel Aged from St. Boniface. 22 oz bomber purchased from brewery (21/10/20), Ephrata, PA. $15 (no tax, $0.692/oz). Bottle # 975 of 1200. Stored at reefer in store and at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 05/03/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated other than “2020” in the name. Served at 53.6 degrees (I got tired of waiting) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 57.0 degrees.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, ruby at the edges.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.7 cm, aggressive center pour), citron, high density, and average retention, diminishing to a 0.7 to one cm crown fed by highly active carbonation, and a complete cap. Second pour produces a 1.1 cm head.
Lacing – Poor – just a few drag marks.
Aroma – 3.25 – Aroma begins with roasted malt, chocolatey, no yeast, no hops.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins slightly bitter with weak chocolate. No hops, no yeast, no rye. No ethanol (11.3 % ABV, according to BA, NOT marked on label) taste or aroma. Gastric warming occurs and gradually ramps up to borderline uncomfortable before sliding down the tail of the curve. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends slightly bitter.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, approaching creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (Note: Rye barrels are not mentioned on the bottle but were written on the board for the beer list.) Well… Somewhat disappointing. While the chocolate malt comes through nicely, the rye has faded into oblivion, beneath notice. This seems mostly to be an alcohol drenched Impy stout with nothing other than homer appeal. IMHO.
