Growler fill at brewery taproom.
Poured a lovely pitch black with fair amount of fine, light tan head and good lacing. Smells of cocoa, roasted malts, dark fruity notes suggestive of a Belgian strong ale. Tastes sweet malts forward, chocolate notes, fig, prune and some herbal quality to offset the sweetness and some notes of citrus/pine that complement the sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium to full, with a good amount of carbonation to provide astringency and prevent it from becoming syrupy – nice clean finish. As typical of the style, as it warms, it gains complexity.
Port City has produced another solid beer, a lovely take on an imperial stout – the use of the Belgian yeast provides it with some of the best qualities of a Belgian strong dark. Well balance, smooth, and quaffable with a well hidden ABV – I’ve found a new go to beer.

got a growler of ONE this past Friday during their growler hours.

A: pretty black body. head is frothy and has some nice brown tints to it. retention and lacing are good.
S: aroma starts with some char. a little bit of burnt grain. a good bit of cereal. reminds me of something chocolatey.... maybe coco puffs?
T: starts mellow and sweet. as the flavor continues espresso and chocolate notes come out. nothing sharp, every flavor is very well-rounded. finish is clean and pretty dry. makes revisiting the glass very easy.
M: full bodied.
D: a full bodied stout that is pretty easy drinking thanks the to the yeast. pretty neat having this big of a stout body fermented with belgian yeast.

5/24….beer is a pitch black, light tan foam. Coffee espresso notes. Is there Vanilla? Sharp, then a coffee taste. Chocolate too. Lighter bodied. Good beer.

From tap to taster glass at Whole Foods on 2/5/12
*From notes

A: Extremely dark and evil black in hue. A good and tight one finger burnt chocolate chip cookie head tops the beer. Lovely lacing and retention.

S: A bit muted. Not as much cocoa or charred malt reveal themselves in the bouquet. As it warms, the nose certainly improves.

T: Solid stuff, more so then I'd expected. Rich, unsweetened baker's cocoa runs from the start to the mid. Hints of yeast and lees on the finish.

M: Moderately creamy, yet it's a packing a bit more fizz then an ADIS should. Swirl it around, release the gas and it puts it where it should be.

O: Port City has created a very nice ADIS. It's not something that will stand out in a crowded field, but it lays the groundwork for the bigger beers I assume they'll ferment in the future. Recommended.

Oh, and 1st Happy Birthday Port City!

Pleasing interpretation of a Belgian RIS

Presentation: 10 oz draft pour. Menu notes main characteristics and intent. Notes 9.5% Alc. by Vol. Served in a snifter.

A - Black pour with a short creamy head, moderate retention with good surface memory and lacing.

S - Soft yeasty nose with touches of chocolate and coffee… The serving is too cold to have really shine...

T - Palate continues with a nice roasted profile, held up by the Belgian yeast, slight hint of spices and dark fruits over the coffee, and chocolate notes.

M - Medium/full body with medium carbonation, and a slightly smooth touch broken by the bitter yeast punch.

O - Nice offering from Port City

Notes: Glad I got to try this one. Nothing terribly memorable but it reaffirms that Port City is among the best emerging breweries in the region.

Head is a dark tan and fluffy. Beer is black, opaque, and texture is a bit watery but appears to have some depth.

Nice cocoa smell and sweet chocolate notes. The gives a nice bitterness while the chocolate gives some sweet to balance it. Some Belgian spices too.

Same as the smell but with a slight hop bite to it. Bitter coffee and swiss milk chocolate balance the beer while Belgian spices add a nice extra.

Heavy body. Biting carbonation makes it feel lighter. Slick feel. Good feel but light for the style.

Overall, pretty good and worth getting. Not very taxing but still worthwhile.

Had on tap tonight at Galaxy Hut in Arlington, VA. Served in a pint glass.

a - Pours a very dark brown, almost black color, with two inches of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Spotty lacing left on the glass, and no real head retention.

s - Smells of spices, Belgian yeast, mint, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and coffee. Some definite Belgian notes in the nose, pretty nice.

t - Tastes of mint, Belgian spices and yeast, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and toasted malts. Again, definite Belgian malts, more than in the nose. As it warms up, some nice dark fruits as well. A little bit better than the nose.

m - Medium to full bodied stout and moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth, doesn't taste like 9.5% ABV.

o - Overall a very nice Belgian stout, and one of Port City's best offerings so far. Some definite Belgian notes to it; I'd put this up there with their Oktoberfest and Porter as one of their best beers. Worth checking out.

a - has a nice rich feel. It was hard to pull a lot of notes as the restaurant I was in had a lot of smells going on.

s -really dark, rich color. Head lingered for a bit, about one inch. Had some nice delicate lacing.

t - When it arrived cold, I really liked it and was excited to see how it opened up after it warmed. I got tired of drinking it the warmer it got. It is a pretty rich beer.

m - like a thick stout?

o - A good beer from Port City who makes a lot of beers to style, which they do a great job of.
