An interesting concept and brewed with some of the best coffee in the world; I'm in.

A- 375ml corked and caged bottle to a goblet with a somewhat murky golden-apricot body and a massive fluffy white head. The cap ascends to about three fingers high with good retention before dying out to a wide belt at the edges. Lacing is formed with a few spotty patches.

S- Plenty of coffee in here to contrast the intense base Biere de Garde Belgian yeast, which is also very formidable strength-wise. I have found this with a few golden ales brewed with coffee: the coffee comes off as a bit almost stale in the aroma. The base brew is a mix of Belgian yeast spice, orange zest, pepper, banana and there is also a bit of a vanilla sweetness (coffee + yeast combo?). After a short period of time the yeast totally dominates.

T- The coffee is a bit more pleasant here as its roasty and earthy qualities come out better than what was found in the aroma, just more detail to be found. The beans are folded into a base of spicy yeast, pepper, cooking herbs, clove, banana, orange peel, toasted grains, slight candi sugar and grainy bread.

MF- The body is dry and right around a medium overall thickness. The carbonation is crisp and comes down around a high level. Ends with a slight herbal, roasty bitterness.

An interesting idea for sure but in the end it seems like the Biere de Garde base brew just doesn't want to play fairly with the coffee. The spiciness and assertive yeast tones borderline kick the coffee out of the equation after it warms up and a few sips are had. I like this style and love George Howell coffee but together I am not seeing the harmony. Worth trying but not something I would go back to.

12.68 oz. bottle

Pours hazy amber with a dense creamy white foam head. Smells like coffee, caramel, toasted malts, peppery spice, banana, orange citrus, with vegetal earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like toasted malts, coffee, caramel, peppery spice, banana, orange citrus, with vegetal earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, soft and creamy with moderate low carbonation. Overall a really nice bière de garde with Guatemalan coffee.

From a bottle. Copper brown in color. Hardly a head. Smells like vinyl gloves and coffee syrup. Tastes less like gloves. More like an altbier with some café flavor. Silky smooth body. Thick but not syrupy. Pretty ok. Wouldnt purchase it.

No date; released recently.

A: Pours a clear amber with a mid-sized fluffy offwhite head.

S: Bright citrus and coffee. Interesting combo. Lightly peppery and bready malt.

T: Grassy, citrusy and then...coffee. Hmph. Cloves and white pepper with that bready malt backing it up. Lingering coffee and grass between sips.

M: Lighter bodied with high carbonation.

O: Hmph. Not sure that coffee + biere de garde is the greatest thing. It's not bad it just doesn't....mesh well? The coffee flavor is very odd too, I can't quite place it. Meh.
