Vortex is our brand spanking new, single IPA. Clocking in at 7% abv., for all the day drinking to come, in the months ahead. We took pils, red wheat and outrageous amount of flaked oats, to create a super soft, luscious, almost creamy body. We then dry-hopped it with a mix of Mosaic, Mandarina Bavaria, Huell Melon, Santiam and Ella. This beer is packed with aromas of melon, cantaloupe, blueberry, and is ever so juicy.

I had mixed feelings on this beer. I struggled to pour it with much of a head and it settled out pretty quickly. I didn't get the fruity aroma and taste wise, it was much more thin and bitter than I was expecting. On the positive side, when cold out of the fridge, the bitterness was crisp, bracing and enjoyable, the beer was a clear gold and overall average looking with some lacing, and really not bad at all - just didn't really match the description. Given the amount of oat and wheat in the grain bill, I was also expecting it to be a little smoother or fuller in some way. I'd be happy to drink another one. Oh well, glad I got to try it before they go away for good. Cheers to Mystic!

Got a pour of Vortex at the brewery just a few weeks before they are scheduled to close. Really great example of an NEIPA. Too bad Mystic won't be around for long.

Canned 7/22
Poured a light cloudy golden color with a 3F head in a Spielgelau IPA glass.
Indistinct fruit aroma- it’s a bit difficult to identify the fruit flavors.
The MF is quite good: smooth and medium carbonation.
The web site doesn’t mention the hop profile. There could be Idaho 7 in the beer, which can have undefinable fruit tastes.
There’s an earthy flavor, fruity, not quite tropical as the web site indicates.
There’s an off-tasting bitterness in the finish that seems out of balance.
I’m not sure of the recipe direction here. The flavors are not in balance with the bitterness.
Mystic is on and off. Sometimes they have great beer. Deep Space Radio and Bonus Life were excellent,
Other times- definitely not my favorite beers.
Retweaking the recipe is in order here.
