On tap at the Bistro Barrel-aged fest of 2011. From notes. According to the description, this was aged for 2 months in Elijah Craig 18-year barrels.
A: Pours a dark brown that appears nearly black in the center of the glass, though the edges reveal substantial clarity. Light tan head.
S: Some bourbon (very mild). Chocolate and mild notes of coffee that pull into the aftertaste. I keep searching for more substance, and I don't find it.
M: Medium-full bodied. Not much heft to it. Medium carbonation. The finish has slight hints of coffee, but otherwise there isn't much of an aftertaste. I acknowledged in my notes that perhaps my palate was compromised from having a couple of other beers ahead of it, so I decided I wouldn't upload my notes -- until I had the brandy barrel aged version of this baltic porter last night (11/19) on a fairly clean palate. I encountered the same flaws: the beer is fairly thin, it picks up little from the barrel, and it lacks a substantial finish.
O: This is simply an unremarkable beer. I really want High Water to succeed, as I thought highly of Steve's efforts at Valley Brewing, but so far I've been underwhelmed and unimpressed by High Water's beers. This beer could use a thicker base and more time in the barrels; right now it delivers very little in terms of flavor.
