This review from notes taken March 29th, 2011 regarding the ‘Prieta Real Imperial Stout.’ Off-tap at the brewery this beer was a dark, nearly opaque brown color with one finger of head. The retention was good as a skim and the lacing scattered. The aroma was of chocolate, molasses, roasted malt, light coffee and sadly, formaldehyde. The flavors were askew, too much molasses and alcohol thus giving it a fuel-like note. I also tasted chocolate, roasted malt, black patent malt and coffee. Very similar to an average homebrew version of an Imperial Stout. The body was full, the carbonation light and the mouthfeel smooth.

Pours a nice, opaque black with a fizzy tan head that settles slowly. A nice, amount of lace clings to the glass with every sip.

The aroma is pleasant and full of roasted malt, a bit of coffee and the slightest hint of hops in back.

Flavor is full of a rich, roasty malt character with some dark fruit notes, semisweet chocolate and a slight dryness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-full body with a nice, creamy texture from carbonation.

A nice, high ABV is well hidden (and welcome) in this well-rounded, excellent offering from a tiny brewery in the Embudo valley.
