On tap at the brewery. Served in a goblet.
Appearance - Black with a thin but persistent khaki head. Leaves moderate lacing.
Smell - At first whiff, it's apple. The more I smell it the more the base beer comes out and I get less barrel. Roasted chocolate malt. Seems in conflict with the apple, but I don't mind.
Taste - Here the base is much stronger at the start. Very toasty at first. Very little sweetness. Chocolate malt. The barrel yields a slight apple flavor at the beginning and comes back with a vengeance in the finish. Apple brandy flavor surrounds the back end in a mix of chocolate and appley booze.
Mouthfeel - Almost no alcohol to it. It's low in ABV and it seems like the barrel overwhelms the beer in the finish
Overall - I'm still not the biggest fan of apple brandy barrels. Barleywines seem to take to them the best. This is all over in flavor, which doesn't make it bad, just unfocused.
