Had Velvet Hammer at the Lake Bluff taproom, Lake Bluff, Ill., on draft into clear plastic pint beer cup.

Creamy, hoppy, sweet, chocolate, vanilla, bitter, roasted fantastic concoction.

Velvet Hammer is a rich, dark imperial porter with a balance of roast and caramel sweetness touched off with undertones of vanilla from a slew of Madagascar beans added during fermentation. It’s smooth as velvet when it hits your lips (and tastes so good), but after a few its imperial size will bring the hammer down on you. Or maybe it’s just the name of a hard-rock band Rodd wants to start

Served on tap at the brewery in LB.

Pours jet black, clear top. Strong vanilla bean smell. Like ice cream. Finally a nose to an LB beer! Smooth, rich, creamy flkavor. Notes of coffee. Can really taste the vanilla. Kind of a clingy aftertaste though. Hearty. Not an easy one to down - a sipper for sure.
