The Anchorage crew started with a barleywine aged in Woodford Reserve Double Oaked bourbon barrels before transferring it to Willett and then Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels for a total aging time of 18 months. Then they blended it with an imperial stout aged 21 months in a mix of Heaven Hill and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked bourbon barrels.

Bottle. Colour is almost like obsidian, with a tan head. Nose is very sugary, especially dark brown sugar and Demerara. The palate is immensely heady /boozy and tangy with huge amounts of high cocoa mass dark chocolate. The entire palate is warming, especially on the soft palate and down the gullet. There are tons of oaky tannins here and an unsurprisingly strong bourbon hit. Divinely strong .

I have passed on the last few 375ML Anchorage bottles I’ve seen. Though they’ve almost uniformly been world class, that price…that price. Black waxed.
And that wax sucks. It’s laid on thicker than asphalt & only slightly softer. Stout rules the appearance, it’s close enough to black that I won’t split hairs. The aroma ain’t playin’ around; it’s all barrel, all the time.
Bleed Out it hot. Like, fire-poker-in-the-throat hot. Once past the booze (which I can’t really get past) there’s serious bourbon, hella molasses, sweet & sticky, mangled up with caramel, healthy oxidation that doesn’t detract from the beer, & soft notes of vanilla & oak on the finish. Booze – all the way through everything. Surprisingly thin for a huge beer, but that just makes it easier to take down a four pack in one night.
As expected from the lineage, the barrels shine here. The base blend is a touch odd & doesn’t marry up quite right for me. Still a very good brew.

Pours dark, mildly longer lasting tan lacing. Strong barrel scents, notes of chocolate, dark fruit. Sweet tasting-dark fruit, caramel, and vanilla, all blending with the barrel presence. Medium bodied, and after nursing this for a few hours, not as thick and syrupy as at the outset. Definitely hot in terms of booziness. Like the other reviews, definitely more of a barleywine than a stout. Pretty darn good beer.

another cool barleywine and imperial stout blend from these guys, enormous and viscous, boozy and sweet, and absolutely loaded with barrel character, an impressive and intimidating specimen to say the very least. this time its a little more stout than barleywine to me, although the grain complexity is certainly there, definitely black in the glass, crazy leggy and viscous, very little apparent carbonation activity. the aroma here is black licorice, burnt drip coffee too long on the heater plate, and strong oak with a toasted coconut aspect to it, some serious bourbon on this, some incredibly mature beer in this blend it seems, wow. its hotly alcoholic too, some brown sugar in the mix, light spiciness, very layered. the flavor brings more toasted coconut, vanilla and hazelnut too, and with all the malt sugar still in the mix it has a dessert vibe, totally palate and throat coating on each sip. wet tobacco, almond, charred oak, hot whiskey, molasses, toffee, and smoke as well, incredibly thick, dark chocolate on the swallow, this seems real wintery and like the kind of thing i should be drinking fireside. i like the stout being so forward in the blend, seemingly a slightly different point of departure than endless ending, a similar project. lucky to have been able to drink this with my homie, real special beer, small doses for sure, but of the finest quality and insane maturity, elite.

Pitch black pour with no head. Taste has great barrel, rustic oak forward, caramel plays great though the bourbon flavors, barley, toasty earth, and prune. Nose has more sweeter dark fruit, dark chocolate shavings without as much barrel complexity. Feel is barrel driven, very warm, and smooth with barley and booze flair.

Pours deep dark brown. Aroma is amazing combination of whiskey, chocolate & caramel. Taste is phenomenal. Follows nose with addition of barrel flavor. Agree with comment that barleywine flavor is predominant-- which is absolutely fine with me. Mouthfeel is medium. Incredible strong ale & well worth the price tag.

poured from a black-waxed 375mL bottle into a TG DBA tumbler. pours a dark brown - not quite barleywine brown but not quite stout black. no head to speak of. whiskey barrel, toffee, caramel, faint raisin, chocolate and more barrel. taste follows and it’s definitely more barleywine than stout but the chocolate aspects of the base stout shine through more as it warms and opens up. there’s certainly no shortage of barrel character here and it’s my favorite aspect of this beer. full mouthfeel with a little more lively carbonation than i expected given my experience with both styles from anchorage. as it warms up though, it has a stickiness to it that lends itself to the barleywine style. really good blending of these two styles but that bar has been set so high by continuance b1 and this fell well short of that. still, really enjoyable ale.
