“Double dark ale” is our attempt to brew from scratch a beer that rides the line between barleywine and imperial stout. This version was double oak-aged for 19 months in a blend of Willett rye and 15-year 1792 Calumet Farms bourbon barrels, and then finished on toasted coconut. Brewed in honor of one of the most innovative, pioneering and influential blade smiths in our modern era, Steve Schwarzer.

poured from a white-waxed 375mL into a perennial snifter. pours thick and oily black with a quick-to-fade dark brown foam cap that recedes into nothing but coconut floaties atop the black liquid. chocolate-covered coconut balls soaked in bourbon on the nose and taste. it’s so much bourbon it’s not even that sweet to me. nice balance of the two and i can’t say enough about this base beer. work of art. very stouty but also quite barleywine-like. whatever it is, it’s amazing. the barrel treatments are great and the coconut addition works so well. thick mouthfeel. world class beer.
