- Appearance -
ruby to deep brown in color at around 25 SRM due to blackberries used in the brewing process, mild carbonation, poured with a quarter-inch head which did not allow for much head retention, and served in a Moon Tower Sudworks 16 ounce opaque black plastic cup
The use of a plastic cup was surprising, and the lack of head was a little disappointing.
However, the beer was filled to the brim of a collectible plastic cup with their brewery's name and logo on it. Their logo features the brewery's name Moontower Sudworks under a sudsy pint glass branded with an Eye of Providence and is centered on a large Star of David with the brewer's names Young & Shannon at the top. The eye on the dark cup with such dark liquid inside added some value to the overall appearance, as if the Illuminati had offered some secret brew.
- Smell -
citrusy, sweet, and perfumy aromas overall with some blackberry fruitiness coming through
If poured in one of their pint glasses, the beer might have retained more head and come through with stronger aromas.
- Taste -
The blackberry flavor comes through well enough to remind you what it's made with.
Another dominant flavor is a slightly more sweet than sour cotton candy with a little carbonation on the tongue that offers a decent bite. The flavors come on strong, though without tasting too alcoholic, and drop off somewhat abruptly leaving little prolonged taste.
The style is an interesting one: It is a Fruit / Vegetable Beer due to the blackberries, is smooth and rounded as a Blonde, and is high in ABV like a Strong Ale to make an "Imperial Blonde with Blackberries," so the bartender says.
- Mouthfeel -
light, thin body, and smooth mouthfeel overall with a slight carbonation on the tongue to offer a decent bite
- Overall -
This is definitely a fun and enjoyable beer. Subsequent brew attempts might benefit from a deeper fruitiness, thicker head, and longer lasting flavor profile, though it was definitely exciting to try and was dangerously easy to drink at 10 ABV!
The atmosphere of the brew house also contributes to a cozy party / concert feel:
-loud heavy metal music and red lighting for the minimal seating near the bar / cashier
-quieter ambiance away from the same music and dim white lighting for the dozen or so picnic tables on a large grassy green yard home to some roaming neighborhood cats
-funky and delicious food, including their specialty wild-game hot dogs on pretzel buns
Mine was an elk dog cooked with cheddar and bacon served with sauerkraut. Yum!
