Had in a bottle at Preachers in Hobart. The guy warned me that a large proportion of the fermentables are honey, so if I don't like honey, I'm unlikely to enjoy it.
Ok, I don't really like honey, but I wanted to give it a go anyway.
Pours a cloudy and opaque dark brown colour. Very fine head of off-white/beige. Huge amount of floating sediment.
Lots of honey on the nose, with just a bit of deep grain. Dark characters of vegemite with some funky floral organics. Nice, but the floral honey characters really dominate.
Taste is similar. Sweetness with honey/floral organics is dominant, almost dragging the beer into braggot territory. Sharp acidity on the back as the sweetness dries out, leaving a very light feel and finish.
Not that great, and the darkness that the "porter" in the name promises is noticeably absent, and I feel like it's really needed to balance the honey sweetness.
