this beer pours a very deep brown/black and appears to have no carbonation, no froth whatsoever. so at first glance i was a little underwhelmed... but it starts looking up quickly -- this beer smells great!

the aroma is sweet, roasted carmelized sugar. very deep chocolate notes on the drink with elements of tobacco on the back end. you get some sweetness from the oats and the body is good enough... has the feel of a Belgian Double ale like Rochefort 8 more than a stout i think.

the bitterness is on point... it is like a belgian oatmeal stout. i could use a little more oats to really up the body of the beer... but this was good.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I feel some of the previous reviews really underrate this interesting beer. It is a little thin in mouthfeel, but the taste is surprisingly complex. There is nuttiness, smokiness, and sourness all blending together to make a very enjoyable, rather subtle beer. Drink at the right temperature.

 

Appearance - Pours black with cola brown edging and a cocoa colored finger's worth of head. Fair retention results in a broken island of suds in the middle with a small ring around the edge of the glass. Small, spotty lacing with little stick.

Smell - Subdued aroma. Hints of cocoa, oats and a lightly sour note from the belgian yeast.

Taste - Moderate chocolate cocoa and a touch of caramel upfront, then a bit of oats and some sourness from the yeast comes into play. Light roastiness once warmed, and it finishes with faint mocha and sourness.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body with light, tingly carbonation. Very smooth and slick going down. The best aspect of this beer.

Overall - I can't help but walk away feeling disappointed with this beer. For the price I could have had a vast number of better beers and still had a few bucks left in the ol' pocket. It's a very average oatmeal stout with a touch of belgian yeast character. Definitely not a future purchase... maybe if the price were halved.

King Leopold pours a medium dark brown with minimal head that quickly fades. The beer immediately provides a burnt BBQ blast, accompanied by a cheap soda-like carbonation and inappropriate chocolate flavors that force themselves through the mess. I've been excited by Triple Voodoo's beers but this to me is an experiment gone bad. A collision of wacky flavors with an offensive mouthfeel. It's rare that I find a beer that I actively dislike but here it is.

 

 

On-tap poured into a Pilsner glass. Thin tan head, not much lacing, lovely deep dark brown color. Aroma is rich, complex, and a bit fruity--coffee, chocolate, and figs or plums. Flavor is deep, rich, balanced, dark, and a bit sweet and smokey--grapefruit hops wrapped around coffee, chocolate, and malt. Mouth feel is medium thick. This is one at least one of the best oatmeal stouts I have tasted, and I really like oatmeal stouts!

Pours a murky super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and slight Belgian yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and Belgian yeast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that seems to work well with the Belgian yeast.
