its neat to have a belgian stout as the base beer (added the beer as an american stout because i did not see a separate category for belgian stout, but thats what this is, belgian dark ale seemed insufficient...), and while the belgian yeast flavors are somewhat tame in here with all the dark malts going on, it makes a cool impact on this beer, giving it some mild fruitiness, an impressive dry finish for what it is, and it really sets the stage for the coffee, which after having this one before the original, i cant imagine not missing the coffee in the base beer. it adds so much, and seems to fill a vital role here. the coffee is heavy roasty with the dark malts, this has bitterness from both, and its mighty sturdy, but the coffee is warming and earthy and rich, and it slows me down, mellows me out, and has beautiful chocolate notes to it that i would really miss if they werent there. smooth body to this, not quite enough carbonation for something belgian, but it has a lead-like density to it that i find attractive. notes of dr pepper soda, tobacco, anise, minerals, and light green pepper to finish, its complex and delicious, and the yeast and the coffee are unlikely friends here. a clever beer, a tweak or two away from all time. i thought the beer in here was awesome, this is highly unconventional...
