Sampled at Ballast Point's 12th Anniversary Festival on Saturday, reviewed from notes, people were excited about this one and it was certainly one of the most unique brews there
A-Light pink color that has a little red in it, 1/2 bubbly white head that did not last long at all, minimal retention, some lacing though, beer was nice to look at and tasted nothing like what it appeared to
S-Lots of hoppiness, citrus including grapefruit, lemon, and tangerines, also a big watermelon aroma, sugary yeast, candy, and grassy accents
T-This one is a hop monster, do not be fooled by the way it might look or smell, it also a big citrus character, the cactus adds some nice sweet and fruity flavors, starts off and ends hoppy but the middle is made up of watermelon and tangerine juice, it is almost comttonmouth dry but the fruit saves what balance it does possess and makes everyhing work well together, interesting brew
M-Sweet, very dry, and sticky mouthfeel, medium bodied, lots of carbonation, taste lingers with lots of underlying fruits
D-Could drink a few pints of this, dry and bitter flavor might be heavy on the stomach after a while, alcohol is well hidden though and fruit characters lure you in, rather smooth
This is what the sign next to the tap said about it at the festival: "It is a wheat ale fermented with Belgian wit yeast, refermented on a proprietary reduction of locally grown hybrid cactus fruit and heavily dry-hopped. Don't let the color fool you!"
I never thought I would have a cactus beer but this was a nice surprise, this brewery really pushes the limits and they come up with some cool ideas, would like to drink again sometime, worth trying
