Sampled on tap at Sun Up Brewing; March 2011
The beer arrives with a brown colored body that is topped by a brown tinged, tan colored head. The nose smells of roasty, toasted malt that seems a bit watered down somehow. More specific notes of coffee, dark cocoa and toasted whole grains get a bit more amplified as the beer warms up. In the end though the nose is quite a bit more muted than I would prefer.
The flavor hints at a sweetness only (I was expecting more sweetness since this is a Milk Stout), but there is a strong, chocolate flavor in the finish as well as a lighter-roast coffee note. The body of this beer is quite light, though I wouldn’t characterize it as being at the watery level. The flavor also seems a bit washed out and muted. This is fairly tasty (or at least the right flavors seem to be here), but it comes off as being quite bland because everything seems so muted; it is certainly down right quaffable though.

Sampled 3/4/2011 at the brewpub.
Pours black/brown with some red showing when held in the light. Silky smooth (very) low beige head that does not stick around or lace the glass.
Aroma is milk (lots of it), ash, roast, and chocolate in that order.
Flavor is very milky, but also strangely ashy and burnt. Needs to be less roasty and more chocolatey. Medium bitterness.
Body is medium, under carbed, and not real drinkable. Not going back for another.
