Sampled on tap at Sun Up Brewing; March 2011
The beer arrives from the tap with an amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a dark red color that shows clear and a brighter red color when held up to the light. The nose has a chewy hop and malt interaction going on that has specific notes of pine, menthol, toasted grain, lots of tangelo, sweetened grapefruit zest, lychee, ruby red grapefruit, berry notes as well as some some biscuit like maltiness to it.
The flavor is nice and hoppy; it is quite herbal, even herbaceous with a hemp-oil note to it as well as lots of fruit character. The hop fruitiness leans towards flavors of tangelo, candied citrus zest and even something like candied, fresh pine needles. The malt plays a supporting role here, but softly adds lots of caramel and toasted grain flavors that serve as a backbone to the upfront hop notes. Sweet tea and caramel notes start to come out more as the beer warms up, but this is still a hugely hoppy, herbal, citrus and tropical fruit infused drinking experience. This is pretty nice, and I am glad that the crystal malt character is not so much as to kill the balance of this beer.

This was orginally a Pro Am beer but I'm pretty sure that it became one of the blend components for Voltron.
Sampled 3/4/2011 at the brewpub.
Pours clear red, medium white head, decent retention, and leaves some lace on the glass.
Aroma is quite malty with some hops and roast(?) in the background.
Flavor is pretty complex. Pine, noticeable roast, honey, earthiness, and grapefruit all backed by lots of bitterness.
Medium bodied and drinkable, meh.
