While “lager” generally conjures images of clear, yellow beer with a crisp character, this is a darker take on the style. The color tends toward a dark burgundy, with the Vienna malt in particular bringing a tinge of spice to the full, malt-forward body. Vanguard hops provide an earthy bedrock for this winter-friendly brew.

Tap at closed for business. Fairly dark cloudy, orange/brown pour. Solid finger of light tan, laces fairly well.
Aroma, malty and nutty. Faint herbal quality.
Taste, again malty toffee, hazelnut. Almost a spicy yeast aspect as well. A very nice toasted malt finish. Reminds me more of a Marzen, but it's quite nice.
Heavy side of light, good fine carbonation. Drinks very well. Two weeks down in Charleston and I am impressed with Holy City.

A: Got this on-tap at Gene's Haufbrau. Had a dark brown color and a cloudy consistency. There was almost no head to speak of and even less lacing.
S: A very malty smell with an almost nutty quality to it.
T: Tasted of toasted malt, that nutty quality, and some mild spices thrown in for good measure. A bit different flavor than I expected from a Vienna Lager, but warm and easy to drink.
M: A well-carbonated beer with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.
O: On the whole. this is a well made and interesting take on the style. Drinkable.
