Notes: For coastal locals like us, the annual hurricane season is equal parts fun and terror. We all follow a series of storms with weird names like other folks follow pro sports teams, tracking paths and occasionally buying bulk batteries and jugs of spring water. The least we could do is brew some beer to help alleviate anxiety during these tense months. The Hurricane Series of IPAs, with varying strengths corresponding to each of the storm categories, is a public service of HCB.

The ABV on Category 2 IPA, brewed on September 19, 2012 and the third in the series, makes it sound like a tame beast. The hop schedule, however, is a wild animal. Copious hopping in the boil with Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, and Cascade was followed up with a 10lb Amarillo dry-hop. The end result is an IPA with a citrusy aroma and arresting bitterness. If this doesn't take your mind off the stormy Atlantic, nothing will.

A: This poured a nice copper color with a thick white head that lingered, leaving a nice amount of lacing on the glass.

S: The hops are definitely present in the aroma, as they should be. There is a nice mixture of citrus and grassiness that balance each other quite well.

T: What you smell is what you taste with this beer. The hop flavors are very forward (citrus and grass/pine notes) and then the taste finishes with bitterness.

M: The carb is pretty good, though difficult to be sure of since this sample is a growler pour, but I did have a sample fresh and this holds true. It also has a nice dry finish, which I enjoy in this style.

O: This is a very solid, very tasty IPA. I would definitely have it again as it is so drinkable and delicious.

A: Had this beer on-tap at Gene's Hofbrau, poured into a pint glass. Had a copper color and a hazy consistency. There was a small amount of foamy head that lasted a fair amount of time. Great lacing.

S: As you might expect, lots of hops in the aroma, with some citrus as well.

T: Like the smell, the taste was dominated by hops. This beer almost had a DIPA-level amount of hops (not a bad thing). Also had light citrus (grapefruit?) and some malt as well. A focused, surprisingly powerful flavor.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a very bitter finish. Medium-bodied.

O: On the whole, Category 2 is a solid, refreshing, well made IPA. Very much a drinkable beer.

Fresh-filled at the brewery. Not sure how this differs from Category 2 (other then ABV). Different hop profile perhaps?

Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a sudsy white head that settles to a thin sheet of haze, leaving a few spots of lacing clinging to the glass. Nice, fresh aromas of grassy American hops, as well as some tangerine, peach, and grapefruit. Smells juicy. Taste consists of more grassy/tropical hops, flavors of peach, grapefruit, and orange zest. Moderate hop bitterness in the finish, very nicely balanced and quite drinkable. Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, with a medium body and good carbonation. Overall a solid IPA offering from HC, wish I could try it next to Category 2 and see what the difference is.
