Brown/black in the glass, with oily beige head. Aroma is slight, but taste is stronger, with some coffee bitterness and a hint of dark chocolate. Has almost a German dunkel character to it.

My second Breton buckwheat beer.

Looks murky brown in the glass with a rocky white head that leaves good lacing.

Smells of buckwheat (a certain distinct spiciness) and darker malts; milk chocolate, light coffee, (salty) caramel, hint of smoke, hint of barrel perhaps and sweetness.

Tastes nice, buckwheat and a chocolate/caramel sweetness. Slight coffee.

Medium-light, creamy mouthfeel with good carbonation composed of tiny bubbles.

Overal a very good beer, especially if you consider it is 4.5%.

I already like this buckwheat stuff!

Dark brown and virtually opaque in the glass. Attractive off-white head. Very nice creamy carbonation and silky mouthfeel. Dark roasted flavor, a nutty, mushroomy dankness enlivened with the touch of tartness. Mellow maltiness along with that grainy buckwheat flavor. Aromatic broth nose and smells like, yes, a galette, the buckwheat crepe of the region.

Not at all sweet, but rich with malt and just slightly charred. Hops don't provide much flavor but add the right balance of bitterness in the background. Totally refreshing and pleasing beer. This is a category crowded with mediocre beers more suitable for washing down pizza. I give it a high rating for being so interesting and heads above the crowd. All the better for being so flavorful a low-alcohol brew.

Poured from the 500 ml Belgian-style bottle. Purchased at the center city supermarket in Rennes, Brittany.

Part of a variety pack of 3 beers my dad got me as a present from his vacation in France.

Pours an ink black with a small tan head that sinks down to a film and leaves some nice spotty lacing around the glass.

The smell is not very strong but roasted and smokey with plenty of caramel and malts. There's something in the back of the nose that reminds me of green olives as well.

Flavour is similar but stronger but with some chocolate added and less of the smokiness. Some grainy flavours, bits of pepper and a nice coffee like bitterness wrap up the taste.

Mouthfeel is a little grainy and thin but certainly drinkable.

Overall this is a nice surprise, who knew the French could make beer as well? It's a good dark lager that is sufficiently complex yet easily drinkable. Certainly a beer I'd enjoy having again should the opportunity arise.

330ml bottle poured in a chalice.

A: Pours a dark brown/black colour with a nice and dense foam head. Medium retention and some lacings left

S: Smells oak. Nice sweet smell. Candy sugar, caramel and roasted malts. Reminded me a whiskey or a good port wine.

T: Woody taste. Quite smooth. In fact, it tastes like it was bit stronger. Difficult to imagine that it's only 4.5% ABV beer

M: Light to medium body. Good carbonation. Moderate on sweet and bitterness

O: Definitely a drinkable beer. I could easily drink "half crate" of it... :p
