Another beauty from the new Tullucross brewpub in Manchester, CT. This cask ale shows a bubbly dark/opaque brown with a very sturdy one-finger tan head with modest lacing. The aroma is a bit startling for the style, sharp with green rhubarb and acidic alcohol. No malt presence other than a very faint hint of chocolate perhaps. Not real inviting but let’s see. The taste buds capture much more of what I was hoping for. A frothy chocolate vegetable concoction with a malt and alcohol presence. May sound odd but it’s likable enough. It’s got a near milkshake quality, medium-plus bodied with a bit of a resinous feel that is fairly typical of cask brews with very little action and a somewhat aqueous quality. Alcohol is a bit of a theme though it’s not notably warming. The alcohol taste is what lingers, not the malt or chocolate, so ultimately this does not excite me much. Worth a taste but no session beer with this flavor. Wish the chocolate sweetness could come out more to overcome the otherwise harsh personality I get here. I will say that it mellows a little as you get through the pint and it might not have helped matters that this was preceeded by a very hoppy IPA. So try it if you can.
