Rogue Harbor's Black IPA comes to me in a tall, thin mug. The body is dark brown to black and completely opaque. The head is brown and about three fingers tall. Retention and lacing are both great, and the beer is served at the appropriate temperature instead of being ice-cold.
The aroma is mostly roasted malts with a kick of citrus from the hops.
The flavor is similar to the aroma in that the roasted malts and a touch of black bread dominate. The roasted character is very nice, and just before I think that it will be the entire beer, a big kick of bitterness creeps up and brings grapefruit with it. The mixture of the two makes that minty-almost jasmine-like flavor that I keep coming across in these Black ales. The finish is bitter, but more roasted malt comes through. Overall, this reminds me of a very hoppy porter, which is to say that it is on the roasted, less hop-aggressive end of this style.
The mouthfeel is nice, full and smooth with a bit of an oily hop feel in the finish.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Although the other two beers that I tried here were good, I think this one is my favorite of the bunch so far. I'm looking forward to being able to try a new brewer's choice here every month; I'll probably make trip to try each.
