Ale from the Old Vale is an English-inspired ale brewed with hops and herbs grown on our farm. The all-malt ale starts dry and bitter, with sweet herbs supplying the balance. Native herbs blue giant hyssop and bee balm produce a big herby aroma.

A bit too sour for my taste. Left me wanting something different.

Ale from the Old Vale pours a hazy golden color, with lots of sediment, and not much head. Sour aroma; very earthy. Flavor is just a little tart, earthy, full of vegetables, lots of herbs, dry. Good body and feel. Overall, very different, herbs and full of vegetables, but good.

This is a strange beer. I live 20 or so miles from where this is made, and when I asked the liquor clerk what this was like...he could only say "it's like a salad in a bottle".
Smells like a cider. Tastes like a salad blended, left to ferment and then bottled.
Carbonated, bitter, dry and strange. This is the beer you give to someone if you dislike them and want them to leave and never return.

Poured from 12.7oz bottle into glass. No bottling date information found on bottle. Refermented in the bottle which precludes an ABV% reading for what is poured.
Final pour with the lees results in a murky, apricot orange colored body. Thin off white head. Leaves behind small spots of lacing.
Aroma is both sweet and bitter, with a strong herbal funk. Quite distinctive, and smells like a living beer.
Initial taste is sweet and funky, followed by the bitter funk. Has oak and red wine notes. The herbal bitters and woody component comes back into the mouth when the beer is swallowed, and as the after taste. The sweetness is floral and also from herbs, which is interesting that the herbs bring both the sweet and the bitter to the taste. Brewer's notes includes fennel and oregano as beer aspects, and these can be induced by sipping the beer, but it is difficult to separate these herbs distinctly.
Medium to fuller mouth feel. Good carbonation. Rather a dry finish overall.
This is a real reminder that ale is a fermented beverage, and can be made from all sorts of native plants and herbs. Anything that can ferment can be included into a drinkable beverage. The beer is rather unique, but is a great smelling and tasting drinking experience.

Cloudy golden orange pour with a nice white head and plenty of lacing. Nice sour fruit and herbal aroma. Taste follows the nose with a nice sour/tart fruit flavor and lots of herbal flavors. Don’t get any bitterness at all.
