Style: Barrel-aged English-style Barleywine
Color: Chocolate Brown
IBU: 40
SLEEPING STANDING UP is the first barleywine ever produced by the DC Brau team. The first release of the new brewery-exclusive dock series, Sleeping Standing Up was aged in 25-gallon One Eight Rye Whisky barrels for three months.
Tasting Notes:
An attractive off-white, tan head sits atop a malty, high octane beverage. Aroma’s of light booze, toffee, un-ripe fig give way to a complex tapestry of malt flavors that are perfectly balanced by hop contributions of the Willamette variety. SLEEPING STANDING UP boasts flavors of marmalade, candied orange and dry fruit cake that excite the palate, liven the senses, and warm the soul. Perfect drinking for colder weather!

Poured on tap at dc brau. 5 oz into a taster cup.
Pale amber, slightly cloudy with a lemon colored edge. Faint tan creamy collar to khaki presented.
Excellent aroma. Explosive fruit tones of sharp lemon and a supper sticky caramel. Oozing raisin and juice with touches of mild oak.
Palate really sings. Rich bodied with thick but controlled touches of caramel and light raisin. The fruit quality on this is explosive, faint touches of cherry, tangy sweet citrus of lemon and orange rind, and a thick crystal tasting sugar molasses like component. Great mouth feel almost silky, with this wonderful buttery toffee note.
Great barleywine, real impressed.

Thanks to my Washington D.C. friend for leaving this on the table of a recent gathering of old ass, semi-invalids. 16 oz. can split with my wife after midnight. Not a great idea.
The pour is light orange, looks like an old school IPA that lost its carbonation (& mojo). Not much coming off the surface & plunging up my nose, touch of orange, rye spiciness. Tame.
Sleeping Standing Up – I do this sometimes when working. Seriously. If there’s no one around, & you’re on a straight stretch, just close your eyes for a dozen steps. It’s a lovely interlude. Do it all the time, & only whacked into a wall once. The beer? What? Not much beer here, mostly rye whiskey barrel. Warm, spicy, rye. Plenty of orange &, well, rye barrel.
Simple. But tasty. Lovely use of the barrel; if there were more heft to the base beer, this would be a serious winner. As is, a very nice brew.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
