Hop forward for a balance that tilts away from malt sweetness and toward citrus hop bitterness, Rani retains an understated balance that isn't completely dominated by the resiny cones.
Pouring a deep golden color, the beer carries the signature 'dry hopped' haze that gives the beer its distinct diffused glow. The beer forms a dense white head that retains impressively while leaving intricate patterns of lace on the glass as the beer falls. A classic IPA appearance.
Citrusy aromas of ruby red grapefruit, orange zest, and green apples gives a fresh and fruity start. With just enough light caramel malt scent to provide support, the beer is all about hops and a soft malty structure behind.
Flavors of delicately sweet malts give a light powdered sugar sweetness to taste just before the rise of hops. Grapefruit, orange zest, and apples still carve the way but also background elements of spruce, fresh cut grass, and herbal lemon grass help to give layer upon layer of hop flavors that come to the fore front with each sip and as the beer warms. The beer gives a distinct apple-like flavor deep in the session that begins to govern the beer and takes away from the citrus focus.
Medium bodied, the beer starts with a creamy feel that quickly disipates and allows for the clean citrus bitterness, dryish malt memory, and alcohol warmth to provide the crisp and refreshing finish that ipas deserve.
A solid IPA that would be more aggressively hopped and even a touch drier. The apple-like (acedaldehyde) could be more restrained to allow the citrus to shine. A fantastic beer at any measure, this one has a huge upside.
