Potsdamer Weisse

Bought a bottle of this organic beer in Berlin, poured into a glass. Extremely carbonated, very pretty bubbles. Smells and tastes very tart, almost reminds me of kombucha. Very refreshing and tasty. I think this would be a great summertime beer.

Very good Berliner Weisse here. Crisp, clear and full of funky, tart goodness. It isn't pretty but the flavour is pretty damn good. Could have some more Brett going on but that is minor.

Wow, 3%? I did not notice that when I bought it. I hope it has other redeeming qualities.

A: For the majority of the pour, it looked like a Kristallweizen, the yeast really clung to the bottom until i shook it out. Short head, not a very bright weizen, more sun bleached. Small, slow but a healthy amount of rising carbonation.

S: A very different smell for a weizen. Banana chips with nail polish. The nail polish is what makes it odd/bad.

T: Whoa, very very weird. Unlike any other weizen I've had. Very lemony tart but with with a sort of rancidicy. and butterkeks (german butter cookies). Weird plant. This will be a pour.

M: Light carbonation sting. otherwise unremarkable.

O: Dump. For a low alcohol beer, that should be made up for in the flavor, but the flavor makes is basically undrinkable. It's sad because I love the Potsdamer Stange

Edit, oh i see that it's a Berliner Weissbier. In that case, it's still bad.

50cl bottle poured twice into Westmalle chalice.

A- Pale straw unfiltered body with a creamy 2 finger head produced through agitating the last 50ml in the bottle and pouring on top. This produces a good retention and lacing.

S- Noticeable brett character to begin with, a hint of soil oddly! Touch of grain.

T- Tart lemon like fruitiness mingles with the brett character again coming together in the dry puckering finish. I didnt find it quite as acidic possibly as the first reviewer.

M- Sparkling spritzy carbonation, light body.

D- A real summer thirst quencher. Not overly sour, enough to give a slightly puckering finish and the brett quality is not overpowering. Good stuff.

500ml swingtop bottle poured into halleroder mini (.3L) stein in Leipzig, Germany. Bottle acquired in Berlin, Germany, at the Karl Marx Allee specialty beer (laden) shop. Served plain without any of the nasty syrup they like to ruin it with (that serving tradition is primarily reserved for little girls). Reviewed live.

A: One finger head of slight cream, fair thickness, and poor retention. Slightly cloudy semitransparent pale yellow colour. Unappealing.

Sm: Heavy on the souring hops, light on some fringe esters, but not berry. A moderate strength scent all around. Appealing but atypical for the region.

T: Shockingly sour body and climax. The sourness drowns out all of the other flavours (if they exist). It's almost as if it were brewed with bacteria or akin to one of the rarer sour Belgian beers. It's more Gose than Berliner Weisse. Pleasant on the finish as the sourness is injected with a slight bitterness. Simple in terms of flavour but complex in terms of layering one flavour. The sourness is treated with care, as it ought to be. It's balanced, but one true note isn't difficult to balance.

Mf: Crisp, just coarse enough, and wet enough to be somewhat refreshing, though this aim is subverted by the sour notes. Perhaps practiced drinkers would feel refreshed by it. Brilliantly complements the flavours of the body.

Dr: This is not at all a beer for everyone, let alone a casual drinker. It's very affordable, but it's also very atypically sour. It's really more a Gose than a Berliner Weisse in terms of convention, excepting the low ABV. It can best be described as a very sour Berliner Weisse, which is maybe why it's recommended to be paired with the nasty little girl candy syrup by some retailers. The bottle makes no mention of this practice, so the retailers must be the ones perverting the flavour. Enjoy cold but not too cold.
