A very strong and intense beer. Aged on oak and Kill Devil Rum. Lively and fruity, sweet, ,bittersweet , heavy body. Alcohol will definitely be perceived. Dominant fruits to figs. Named for Lily, the old black Lab.

On tap at the Café pub room

Very similar if not actually an old ale. Not my favorite barley wine by any measure. But if you like old ales try this one. Rated to style. 3.5

A - Pours a dark reddish brown with a short lived off white head. Good carbonation. 4

S - Definitely oaky with some rum sweetness. 4

T - Lots of oak but almost zero rum. Vinous, oxidized and some dark fruits but not too much. 3.5

MF - Medium body with a semi dry finish. A bit metallic, 3.75

An excellent English Barleywine. Served in a 13 oz tulip glass, this beer had a small off-white head and fairly good lacing. The murky brown color was fairly dense, with little light getting through.

Aroma was rich sweet maltiness and a hint of vanilla.

The oak only came out in the flavor, but it was quite prominent. The rich, sweet malt flavor may have included a little toffee aspect to go along with the vanilla. This is a very tasty big beer. Good bitterness but not like an American hop-bomb barleywine.

Mouthfeel was rich, smooth and fairly complex with the vanilla and oak competing with strong sweet malty presence. The most amazing thing about this beer is the complete masking of any alcohol presence. The menu said 13% abv, this site has it listed as 14.9%. No matter who is correct, this is a BIG beer and there was no alcohol burn at all. Without the evidence of strength on the menu, someone could easily belt down a good bit of this beer OR order a second one and feel really impaired. An excellent slow sipper, this is one of the most enjoyable barleywines I have had.
