On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Thin streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, milk chocolate, cocoa powder, and nutty aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, nutty, and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the flavors are much more char forward than the smell would indicate.

Solid frothy head that leaves a blanket of beige lace. Dark, dark brown but a bright light does pass through.

Mocha aroma of black patent malt. Light cream and some bitter chocolate. Classic.

Closer to coffee flavor than anything else. The body is thin (but not for the style) and the carbonation is high. There's a chewy aftertaste where some notable bittering hop shows up. In the background: almonds and baker's chocolate.
