Thanks to flexabull for including this beer in the UGLY BIF.

Pours a murky reddish brown color, minimal head and no lacing.

Smell is mostly malty but also has a sort of musty? aroma, hard to explain.

Taste is very malty (no kidding!), slight honey presence, the 9% is very well hidden, usually I don't like barleywine's because the alcohol is always evident but this one was easily drinkable.

Bottle from the brewery. Jack Russell was a nice place. Off Highway 50, the brewery is in what looks like a small touristy area, lots of wineries, apple farms, and a brewery! The brewery has a small tasting room, with a bar, and a handful of tables. Outside is a nice large lawn with chairs for sitting in the sun.

On to the beer...

Pours a dark garnet color, clear, and with a decent white head.

Aromas are of stewed fruits, some cereal grains, and oak.

Taste is subtle, smooth, and tasty. Crisp and clean tasting, with some bready malts, a touch of fruits, mostly dates, and a bit of oak as well as a smokey quality. Finish has a touch of alcohol, and mineral bitterness. But this is very malt forward tasting.

Mouthfeel is OK. Seems a little too thin to me though.

Drinkability is very good, and is this beers strong suit. Pretty spot on for a British Barleywine. Nice flavors, and very easy to drink. If I tasted this blind, I would have never guessed that this was anywhere near 9% ABV.
