7.2% batch, poured from a growler

A: dark reddish brown color, hazy, nice creamy off white head

S: nice amount of peaty smokiness and sweet malts, a bit of dark fruit and caramel, slight tinge of coffee

T: peaty smoked goodness, light amount of dark fruit and sweet caramel notes, light earthy hops with a dry, smoky finish

M: nice carbonation, a bit light and watery for the style but good mouthfeel overall with a dry finish

O: very quaffable beer, this growler didn't last too long :) I'm gonna make this a frequent household brew.

Pours a dark brown / copper color, with a faint white head.

Aromas are nice. Very roasted malt smell, with some chocolate and coffee. There is also a smokey quality as well.

Flavors are lighter than expected, but certainly not bad. Some roasted malts, smoke, a hint of chocolate, and a bit of a coffee flavor as well. Flavors are similar to the aromas.

Mouthfeel is too thin. It's not bad, but it's not good. Just feels thin and watery.

Drinkability is pretty good. This beer lacks mouthfeel, but has good enough flavors to keep it somewhat interesting. Not bad... but not great either.

Pours a chestnut color with reddish hues. Small tan head, not much lace. Aromas of roasted malt, chocolate and peat/smoke.
Tasted of sweet, tangy roasted malt, dark chocolate and earthy peat. Finished dry with a restained smoky bitterness that lingered nicely. Less of a sweet character than a lot of Scottish Ales.
Medium bodied with a rich, dry mouthfeel and good carbonation.
The alcohol is very well hidden, making this a highly quaffable offering.

#10 of an 11 beer mixed 12-pack that I recently bought from the Jack Russell Brewing Co. I ordered it directly from their Website, the service was excellent, both packing & delivery was spot-on.

Comes in a 12oz tall, thin neck bottle. It has just the one main obverse label, which has a Scottish Tartan and milk chocolate brown background. It has an inverted golden horseshoe with the words “Jack’s” & “Scottish Ale” is above & below, whilst inside there is a picture of a Jack Russell dog. No Freshness Date, but this is helpfully listed as 6.5% ABV.

It poured out into the glass with a very deep and dark brown body, almost impervious, so much so that I had to get a powerful lamp to back light this one. It is indeed hazy, and emits a fantastic solar red glare. Massive tan head fills my pint Glass, but never threatens Mutiny on the Desk. Average carbonation with some good lacing.

Roasted malts and some dark chocolate hints. The nose is rather restrained actually. The aroma has some astringent bitter malts but is light in strength which is a little disappointing at times, especially after you have tasted the beer for the first time.

WOW. What a surprise! The nose really does not do justice to this beer, and fools you into thinking that this may just be another dark malty beer. Far from it. Sweetish malts start to mingle with a mouth-watering roasted aspect that explodes into a full blown smoked malt; burnt paper hints and some light fatty tingles of smoky bacon fill the middle to bursting point. As the beer works its way into the latter half, the smoked aspect alters to a dry peaty taste with a solid feel. This has strong smoky aspects which has earthy peat tastes that shine through the body.

Rich tastes that fill the mouth with a smooth and luxurious feel, but the smoked malts lend a soily texture to the middle of the beer. Dry in the mouth. Finishes with a smoky ending that has an astringent earthiness. Accomplished feel.

I could drink this one ALL day – no problems. The 6.5% does not even enter into the equation at all. A really good Scottish Ale that belies its strength and is packed full of flavor and is *seriously* drinkable.

Overall: A very nice and welcome surprise from the usual entourage of bland pseudo-Scottish Ales. This one has a disappointing nose though, but this is more than counter-balanced by the rich body that is full of luxurious smoked peat malt flavors. Very Good and Recommended.
