A high alcohol brew, no doubt, but from the aroma youd think it's 12%. Alcohol astringency on the nose overpowers the hops, but the smell of perhaps burned crystal malt finds its way through. I didn't care for the balancing act on this beer. It looks pretty enough, with its amber body and nice tan head, but the heavy mouthfeel didn't sit too well with me. Call this a Double English Ale, I guess. Give me a Bells Stout, instead.

THe second beer I sampled while at the Bells Hotel and Brewery.
The beer arrives in a tall fluted glass exuding a chestnut to amber color with frothy 1 cm off white colored head. The aroma is toffee and slightly nutty some grassy and pine hops are in the background. I also get a little butterscotch in there.
The head leaves a tight latticework as it fades slowly. Several streams of carbonation bubbles rise tot he surface throughout the sampling.
Flavor is some toffee and a bit of husky grain, fairly sweet overall. I also get a bit of piney hops on the finish that allows for some drying of my palate. The beer leaves a bit of a grainy taste in my mouth. Perhaps the beer was rushed just a bit onto tap? Overall another solid beer at Bells, but I think it could use another week or so in the fermenter.
