Inspired by Latin America but brewed in Chicago, the windy city just got sunnier with 5 Rabit's pineapple sour ale. Bright, tangy and rounded, the beery version of horchata makes a culinary debut.
Cloudy and goldenrod, La Pina De Mis Ojos teases the nose with a strong pineapple presence that stands tall above the creaminess of cereal grains, sour scents or any other fruit nuances. But its the malts and their whole wheat flavors that brings a pastry dough, taffy and sweet breadiness to the early palate.
As the ale washes the middle palate, the cereal flavors slowly relax and allow the fruit fermentation character to reveal aspects of apple, lemon, white grape, gooseberry and kiwi. This is all before the generous additions of pineapple reveal itself for a strong and redolent flavor of tropical punch. Remaining creamy and nearly vanilla-like, the beer develops a slight verbena and matcha balance in a balancing, sour late taste.
Medium bodied and staying creamy like German Gose, a rounded malt taste supports the sourness and succulence of pineapple very well but interferes with the beer's brisk and more refreshing acidity and dryness. A brief aftertaste of sourdough and pineapple rind provide echoes of flavor thereafter.
