In the tradition of New England IPA's this beer pours hazy, but with a deep reddish-brown hue. Flavors are hop driven with a huge malty backbone - less caramel notes than I was expecting, but also subdued tropical notes that I thought might fill in the blanks. Like another reviewer noted, this beer is greater than the sum of its parts. Very smooth, finishes dry, very drinkable

This beer pours a a deep reddish brown. The aroma features candied red malts, brown bread, pine, cannabis, roses, and chocolate. The flavor is bitter and sweet, with chocolate, dried cherry, roast pepper, candied red malts, and brown bread. The mouthfeel is fairly full with soft, slightly foamy carbonation. Overall this is a very nice red ale - it is hop driven, but malts are the subtle and lovely, offering up great complexity.

The total is greater than the sum of the parts. This is such and easy drinking beer, esp. for it's size, but as I break it down there is noting spectacular about any particular piece, yet it's quite and enjoyable experience overall.
Slightly cloudy amber of orange and gold/brown. Nice tannish head that takes it time settling out. Full hoppy aroma with some sweetness intermingled with the grassiness of the hops. There is also a bit of spiciness which adds a pleasing character.
Nice malt flavors with a husky toasted malt and then a firm laying down of the bitterness.
Big enough to have a moderate feel and softly carbonated to have some smoothness.
Worth a purchase and maybe a second.

Poured out a clear, amber with a small, white head of bubbly foam. Aroma was fruity and malty with a dose of caramel sweetness. Fruity and malty with caramel, toffee and bread crust. Bitterness is mild with a grassy bite.

Yes, it's an appropriately big, hoppy red. There's a fine balance of smooth breadth and toffee malt complemented by crisp pine and citrus hops. Comes off like a mellowed version of Arrogant Bastard. Toasty aroma. While I prize subtlety, I think this is a style where you need to go bigger.

Pours a dark amber color with a fluffy tan head, nice lacing on glass. sweet bready malts with citrus and pine hops. Taste follows nose eual amount of hops and malts with a slight bitter and sweet finish, not a huge fan of red ales , this one seems to be well made.

I had this poured at Black Woods in Duluth. It pours a dark, rich Amber with a thin white head. The smell is mostly that of bread. Some of the more hoppy beer I've had.

Nice vibrant ruby color, when in the light it almost looks like cranberry juice. Smell is mosaic and rich carmel malts, very pleasing. Bit of rye spiciness, touch of citrus, flavors play well together. Just a little to much sticky sweetness at the end for me but not unexpected based on the style. Absolutely a winner, Castle Danger is grossly under rated.

Castle Danger's Red Hop Rising pours a clear ruby red color. The head is a half inch is sturdy foam that recedes slowly leaving nice, sticky lacing. The aroma is quite balanced for a beer with 'hop' in its name. There is some resiny, citrusy stuff going on, but it is muted by a generous helping of caramel malt. The taste is more hop forward than the aroma, but still well balanced. The citrus comes through with grapefruit, and orange rind with the malts playing a supporting role. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a velvety texture, and mild carbonation. Overall, this is a nice beer that I wouldn't protest over drinking again.

Aroma is mostly caramel and bread, with light citrus hop notes. The taste is more assertive, with caramel, bread and roasted malts at the onset, but then quickly overtaken by a.nice mix of hop flavors - citrus. mango, pineapple, blueberry and a unique herbal twist. The finish is piney and bitter, with some lingering berry notes. Moderate carbonation and dry finish. The body is hop oily, but a little lighter than I expected. Big, bold and tasty Red Ale.

650 mL bottle. Amber body. Doesn't smell that hoppy. I kinda expected more from the name. Light floral hop and bready malt. Taste is a little hoppier, at least a little more dynamic. Citrus hops. Grapefruit. Bready malt. Becomes bitter quickly. Toasty finish. Medium body. Kinda slick from the maltiness. Enjoyable, though I expected more hops. Maybe I'm desensitized.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber/ruby red with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin patchy layer. Lots of creamy lacing.

Smell: A juicy and floral aroma of hops and malt with a balance of earthy hops and sweet caramel hints. Upfront scent of earthy and floral hops with some good hints of grass and pine. Some citrus hints of grapefruit, orange peel, and lemon. Solid malt balance with hints of caramel, toffee, grains, cracker, and yeast. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and earthy balanced taste of hops and malt with grass, citrus, and caramel. Upfront presence of earthy and herbal hops with notes of grass and pine. Citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, and lemon. Good toasted malt presence with notes of caramel, toffee, grains, cracker, and yeast. A very nice red taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, chewy, and drying on the finish.

Overall: A very good take on a bigger Red Ale. Good strong hop presence with a solid caramel malt balance.
